BB Recorder vs Granola (2027): Local Video, Bot and Privacy

BB Recorder vs Granola: compare local video and audio, bot options, offline use, AI model choice, pricing, and consent risk after the Granola lawsuit.

BB Recorder vs Granola (2027): Local Video, Bot and Privacy

BB Recorder and Granola both take meeting notes without forcing a bot into your call, but only BB Recorder keeps the full video and audio on your own computer. BB Recorder is built by BuildBetter. This comparison is our own, based on product facts we checked in October 2026. It covers recording method, local video, offline use, AI model choice, pricing and consent risk. That last topic got more urgent after Chamberlain v. Granola and the other AI notetaker lawsuits filed in 2025 and 2026. If you use Granola today and want a Granola alternative with video recording, a bot option, or tighter control over where your data goes, start with the short answer below.

Short Answer: BB Recorder or Granola?

BB Recorder is a local-first recorder with an optional bot. Granola is a cloud-hosted, bot-free notes app that keeps transcripts but no audio or video.

  • Pick BB Recorder if you want a free recorder that works 100% offline with no account. It saves full local video and audio of Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls, and it offers an optional visible bot.
  • Pick Granola if you want a zero-config, fully hosted, polished notes experience and don't care about running anything locally.

For most product managers, researchers and founders who review calls, the deciding question is simple. Do you ever need to re-watch or re-listen to the actual meeting? If you do, a transcript-only tool won't cover it.

BB Recorder vs Granola: Side-by-Side Comparison Table

The table below compares both tools across the features that matter most when choosing a bot-free meeting recorder. BB Recorder is listed first.

Difference #1: BB Recorder Saves Full Video and Audio, Granola Keeps Only a Transcript

BB Recorder records full video and audio of Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls locally on your computer. Granola keeps no audio or video of the call. It stores a transcript in its cloud.

This is the biggest practical gap between the two tools. A transcript is a derivative record. It shows what a speech model thought it heard, stripped of tone, pauses, screen shares and visual context. If the transcript is wrong, you have nothing to check it against.

With the original recording, you can:

  • Re-watch a demo or a customer walking through a workaround on their screen.
  • Verify an exact quote before it goes into a PRD, a board update or a sales handoff.
  • See screen shares that a transcript reduces to "as you can see here."
  • Re-transcribe later with a better model, a different language setting or corrected speaker labels.

Some concrete cases:

  • Product managers reviewing customer discovery calls can jump back to the moment a user hesitated on a pricing question and judge whether it was confusion or pushback.
  • UX researchers can check tone and body language, which change how a quote should be read.
  • Sales leads can re-watch the prospect's shared screen to see which tools they already run.

Keeping the original audio and video also protects you when a transcript is disputed. If a customer says "that's not what I said," you can play it back. With a transcript-only tool, you can't.

Difference #2: Bot or No Bot — BB Recorder Gives You Both, Granola Gives You One

Granola records without a bot only. BB Recorder records locally with no bot by default and can also send the BuildBetter bot into the call as a visible participant.

Granola captures only what your own device hears. That keeps calls uncluttered, but it also means there is never a visible sign to other participants that a recorder is present.

BB Recorder gives you both modes and lets you move between them:

  • Local, no-bot capture is the default. System audio and video are recorded on your machine, and nobody new appears in the participant list.
  • Visible bot is optional. The BuildBetter bot joins as a named participant, so everyone can see recording is happening.
  • Switch mid-call. You can move between bot and local capture during a meeting, and the local recording keeps going without a gap.
  • Pause and resume the bot or the local recording inside the same recording. That's useful when someone says "can we go off the record for a minute?"

Why does a visible bot matter? It's a transparency signal. Everyone on the call can see a recorder is present, which removes the "I didn't know" problem. It is not a substitute for consent, a point the lawsuits section below covers in detail.

Practical guidance:

  • Use local-only capture for internal meetings and one-on-ones where everyone has already agreed to recording.
  • Use the visible bot for external calls with customers, candidates or partners, where transparency matters most.

Difference #3: Where Your Meeting Data Lives (Local-First vs Cloud-Hosted)

BB Recorder works 100% offline and requires no account, so recordings and on-device transcripts stay on your computer. Granola is a fully hosted service that stores transcripts in its cloud.

With BB Recorder, nothing leaves your machine unless you send it. If you later want team-wide analysis, you can upload recordings to a BuildBetter workspace. That upload is a choice, not a default. The BuildBetter platform, meaning the workspace rather than the standalone recorder, is SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR compliant.

Granola's model is the opposite. It's a hosted service, and your transcript lives on its servers from the start. That's convenient, and for many people it's fine. It does mean a third party holds the record of your conversations, and how that vendor uses the data becomes part of your risk.

Who cares most about this difference:

  • Teams with data-residency concerns, especially EU-facing teams. GDPR fines can reach €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher. That gives teams a reason to ask whether meeting data needs to leave the device at all.
  • Regulated industries such as healthcare, finance and legal, where call content may include sensitive information.
  • People on unreliable connections: travelers, field researchers, anyone recording on a plane or in a basement conference room. An offline meeting recorder keeps working when the Wi-Fi doesn't.

Difference #4: AI Model Choice — Bring Your Own Model or Use the Default

Granola picks the AI model for you. BB Recorder lets you chat with your calls using BuildBetter's models, your own API keys, or a local model.

Model choice sounds like a power-user setting, but it decides two things that matter to most teams: where call content goes for AI processing, and who you have a data agreement with.

  • Local model. Call content never needs to leave your machine for AI analysis. Summaries, catch-up bullets and Q&A over the transcript all happen on your hardware.
  • Your own API keys. If your company already has an agreement with an AI provider, including data-processing terms and spend limits, you can route BB Recorder through it. You aren't adding a new vendor to your security review.
  • BuildBetter's models. This is the zero-setup option if you don't want to manage keys or local models.

Transcription in BB Recorder runs on device regardless of which chat model you choose. Your raw audio isn't shipped off for speech-to-text.

With Granola, the vendor makes this decision. That's simpler, and it's the trade-off of a fully hosted product: you get fewer choices and less control over the processing chain.

Difference #5: Beyond Meeting Notes — Dictation, Screen Recording and Mobile

Granola is meeting notes only. BB Recorder adds dictation, screen recording, automatic meeting detection and mobile capture in the same app.

BB Recorder is one capture tool for calls, voice notes, screen walkthroughs and in-person recordings:

  • Dictation. Press a hotkey, speak, and text lands at your cursor in any app. It's useful for drafting follow-up emails right after a call.
  • Screen recording. Record a bug repro or a product walkthrough with system audio. On macOS it uses Apple's ScreenCaptureKit framework. There's no watermark and no upload prompt.
  • Automatic meeting detection. On Mac and Windows, BB Recorder detects when a meeting starts and records automatically, so you don't miss the first five minutes.
  • Platform coverage. It runs on Mac, Windows (including an ARM build), iPhone and Android (beta).
  • Plaud imports. If you carry a Plaud recorder for in-person meetings, you can import those recordings so hallway conversations and Zoom calls sit in the same library.

If your work happens only in scheduled video calls and you only want written notes, Granola's narrower scope may be enough. Most product people also record demos, capture ideas on a walk, and sit in on-site customer visits. One app covering all of that means one library, one set of hotkeys and one place to search.

Difference #6: Pricing Model — Free vs Freemium With Paid Plans

BB Recorder is free, needs no account, and works offline. Granola has a free tier that limits history, plus paid Business and Enterprise plans.

The pricing models reflect the architectures. Granola hosts your data and runs the processing, so it charges for ongoing access, with history limits on the free tier. BB Recorder runs on your device, so there's nothing to meter. Check Granola's pricing page for current plan details. We don't quote competitor prices because they change.

For teams, there's an optional next step. You can upload BB Recorder data to a BuildBetter workspace and analyze calls alongside Slack conversations, support tickets, surveys and product feedback through 100+ integrations. That's where combining internal and external data pays off: a customer complaint on a call, the matching Zendesk ticket and the internal Slack thread about it show up together. From customer conversation to shipped decision, the evidence stays connected. The BuildBetter platform uses usage-based pricing with unlimited seats, so you don't pay per head to bring more of the team in.

The recorder itself stays free whether or not you ever use the workspace.

When Granola Is the Better Choice

Granola is the better pick if you want a zero-config, fully hosted, polished notes experience and don't care about running anything locally.

It's a good product for a specific kind of user:

  • Individuals who only need written notes and never need video, audio, dictation or screen recording.
  • People who prefer a vendor to choose the AI model and handle hosting, storage and processing entirely.
  • Users who want the fewest possible settings. BB Recorder's flexibility, including local storage, model choice, bot switching and pause controls, means more decisions. Some people would rather not make them.

That trade-off is real, and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. If you need recordings, offline use, a bot option or control over your AI model, BB Recorder is the stronger pick. Those are capabilities you can't add to a transcript-only hosted tool later.

This section is not legal advice. It summarizes public reporting on recent cases so you can understand the risks that apply to any AI meeting recorder, including the two compared here.

Chamberlain v. Granola, Inc.

On July 30, 2026, a proposed class action was filed against Granola in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It brings claims under the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), an all-party consent law, and the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). According to Computerworld, the complaint alleges Granola was designed to record without disclosure to all participants by capturing audio from the user's computer without joining as a participant. It also alleges Granola uses transcription data commercially, including for AI training by default. Granola's documentation describes optional chat alerts and video watermarks. These are allegations, not findings.

The key insight for buyers is that bot-free capture is exactly what the Granola suit targets. Any no-bot recorder, including BB Recorder in local mode, does not notify other participants on its own. Bot-free does not mean consent-free.

  • In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation (N.D. Cal., 5:25-cv-06911-EKL, Judge Eumi K. Lee). Four suits were consolidated on October 22, 2025. On August 13, 2026, the motion to dismiss was partly denied, and ECPA, CIPA and BIPA claims survived. The court treated the vendor as a third-party eavesdropper because it "independently collects, retains, and uses communications for its own commercial purposes" (The Little Binger).
  • BIPA voiceprint suits. Cases against Fireflies.ai (Cruz, C.D. Ill., December 18, 2025; Fricker, N.D. Ill., March 2026) allege voiceprints were built without written notice (tl;dv). A BIPA suit over Microsoft Teams live transcription was filed February 5, 2026 in the Western District of Washington, with a motion to dismiss pending.

The legal risk comes down to two factors. The first is whether other participants know about the recording. The second is what the vendor does with the data afterward. A tool that keeps data on your device reduces the second risk. It does nothing for the first. The Otter ruling's language suggests vendors that don't retain or reuse customer data are in a different position, which supports local-first design, but it is not a legal safe harbor.

Why the damages add up

  • ECPA: the greater of $100 per day of violation or $10,000, plus possible punitive damages and attorney's fees.
  • CIPA: up to $5,000 per violation.
  • BIPA: $1,000 per negligent violation and $5,000 per intentional or reckless violation. A 2024 amendment (SB 2979) limits recovery to one violation per person rather than per scan. For scale, Facebook's BIPA settlement over facial recognition tagging was $650 million.

Per-violation structures multiply across every call and every participant, which is why these cases are filed as class actions.

All-party consent states include California, Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, Montana and New Hampshire. If anyone on the call is in one of them, plan as if everyone must agree. Get consent before recording starts. A disclaimer buried in a calendar invite is weak evidence. Under GDPR, you need a lawful basis before processing begins.

What BB Recorder does and doesn't do here

BB Recorder's real advantages are architectural. Recordings stay on your device by default, and you can send a visible bot whenever transparency matters. It does not collect consent for you, and no tool makes you compliant on its own. With either product, consent is your job.

A practical checklist:

  1. Announce the recording verbally at the start of every call.
  2. Get agreement before you hit record, not after.
  3. Use the visible bot on external calls.
  4. Pause recording immediately when someone asks.

How to Switch From Granola to BB Recorder

Switching takes about five steps and a one-week trial. Because BB Recorder needs no account, you can run it alongside your current setup before committing.

Step-by-step

  1. Save your Granola notes. Keep any transcripts or notes you want using whatever export or copy options Granola provides. Check Granola's own documentation for what's available on your plan.
  2. Install BB Recorder from buildbetter.ai/recorder or bbrecorder.com on Mac, Windows (including ARM), iPhone or Android (beta). No account is required.
  3. Set up capture. Turn on automatic meeting detection on Mac or Windows. Choose local-only or bot mode as your default. On macOS, grant screen recording permission so ScreenCaptureKit can capture system audio and video.
  4. Choose your AI model: BuildBetter's models, your own API keys, or a local model.
  5. Import in-person audio. If you use a Plaud recorder, import those recordings into the same library.

First-week plan

  • Day 1 (and every day after): Set your consent routine. Give verbal notice before recording on every call.
  • Days 1–2: Record internal calls locally. Check that video, audio and on-device transcripts look right.
  • Days 3–4: Try the visible bot on an external call. Practice switching between bot and local mid-call, and practice pausing.
  • Day 5: Test dictation and make one screen recording, such as a bug repro or a walkthrough.
  • End of week: Decide whether to upload to a BuildBetter workspace for team-wide analysis, or keep everything local.
